This painting has been photographed in raking light. The left half shows the severe surface distortion to the paint which has become unstable in parts. The right half shows the corrected surface after prestraining, impregnation, and paste lining. The visual appearance of the painting is already much improved and further cleaning, inpainting and varnishing may then be safely carried out.
